My boyfriend of 4 years and I are going to get married and not tell anyone (elope). We decided that we want to go somewhere we haven't been to before so no Florida, Chicago, (we're from Iowa), Nebraska and I definitely don't want to do something overdone like VEGAS. I was just reading answers to another question and one YA comment really struck a chord with me - "expecting people to travel great distances and take vacation time to do so, to go to destination weddings, weddings on holiday weekends, weddings that are done so cheaply ( i loved the recent " do i have to provide chairs?" questions) that they really really should not not not be done at all, well, these are all new things in this world where anything goes. except, the truth is, it doesnt." I don't mean to target this person at all> i was just hurt by this comment. Both me and my fiance, my fiances parents and my parents live in different cities, so we are having the wedding in his hometown where some of my relatives also happen to live. Most of my side will have to travel around 4-5 hours to get to the wedding.(all in all, about half the guests will need to travel). This is also just after New Years - so my question is, is this really unreasonable of us to have a wedding where people need to travel AND is planned over a holiday? We are having the wedding at this time and this place because with my fiance being in the army it's the only time we can "fit in" the wedding for the last 2 years. Going by the comment above this is a MASSIVE no-no. Do all people think like this?? Is this what all our guests are thinking??

Hey, I'm a student looking to take a vacation to the Caribbean or non-Hispanophone S. America, but I don't have the funds (or the desire) to stay in a hotel. A more guesthouse/hostel operation is what I'd be looking for. Obviously, the shadier the location, the cheaper the accommodations; so, for instance, Guyana would be really cheap to find a place to stay at, but I would have a very real chance of being stabbed in a market in broad daylight.
