St. Tropez - A "must-see" Part Of The French Riviera
By Sandy Knoll A visit to the French Riviera would not be complete without a stop in St. Tropez. Renowned for its miles of glistening white beaches, exotic food and as a playground for the rich and famous - it is THE place to see and be seen. A true jewel of the Riviera, St. Tropez is an animated seaside resort where the azure water and cerulean skies are backlit by brilliant sunsets of ripe apricot, ruby red and gold. The late afternoon breeze from the Med causes the jewel-colored awnings of the sidewalk cafes to snap and wave merrily, and brings a welcome relief from the heat of the day. Here, the air is fragrant with jasmine and mimosa, andthe occasional whiff of a gourmet meal being prepared makes your mouth water. The nightlife in St. Tropez is fast, energetic and frenetic. You can always find something going on -- there are numerous clubs where you can eat, drink and dance the night away. "St. Trop" as it is known by those in the film industry, means "Saint Too Much." It was "discovered" in 1956 when Roger Vadim’s "And God Created Women" was filmed here, launching a young Brigitte Bardot into instant super stardom. St. Tropez became a Mecca to artists, writers and, of course, movie stars in the 60s. St. Tropez is the favored vacation site of chic Parisians and most of Europe. Resolved Question: Best combo of cheap & safe in the Caribbean? Hey, I'm a student looking to take a vacation to the Caribbean or non-Hispanophone S. America, but I don't have the funds (or the desire) to stay in a hotel. A more guesthouse/hostel operation is what I'd be looking for. Obviously, the shadier the location, the cheaper the accommodations; so, for instance, Guyana would be really cheap to find a place to stay at, but I would have a very real chance of being stabbed in a market in broad daylight. On the other hand, Bermuda is safe, but a big tourist destination without good budget places at which to stay. So, any suggestions? Resolved Question: I'm from Texas and want to do a destination wedding in Mexico or the Cayman Islands. Idea on cost per person? We are set on destination wedding, please no comments about being selfish etc. I want as little stress as possible and I don't mind spending money for a vacation with the people I truly care about as opposed to $20,000 for a four hour night that is shared with a ton of people I don't care about. We do plan on paying for our wedding party. Voting Question: Late 20's Married couple. Best place for all-inclusive affordable March Vacation in Dominican Republic? ? We're not into clubbing or anything - more into spending time at the beach or enjoying sites around town. What would be our best choice for destination and most affordable? Anyone recommend a good travel site for DR despite the obvious choices (ie expedia.com, etc)...? Voting Question: good travel websites for very flexible travelers? Are there any websites that allow you to be flexible with your dates (not just +/- 3 days, but more like +/- 6 months) and/or destinations? Iwant to go on a vacation - I don't care when and I have several places that I'd be interested in visiting. I just care how much it costs. Any suggestions?? Resolved Question: If invited, would you accept a dinner invitation from? Andrew Zimmern. Most likely you'd be dining on testicles, head cheese, octopus droppings, barbecued bats, toasted pig ears, cow vein stew and penis soup. Vomit bags are optional, but highly recommended. Eating everything he places in front of your without ralphing, would earn you a vacation for two to the destination of your choice. Bon Appetite :) Resolved Question: What is a good website to plan a trip to Norway, Sweden, or Ireland? I want to plan a vacation to one of these destinations but would like to see if anyone knows of a good website where I can do this and get a great deal? Please help. Thanks! Hey, I'm gonna start off with the background story I have a female friend which we went on a trip together to Europe for a vacation(strictly just friends). On the first night she met a guy who travelled along with us on the rest of the trip (btw...he also had a friend). Really nice guy...so what right? Anyways, on one of our destinations we all wanted to go to a club, but on the way my friend and her new "BF" decided they wanted some alone time. Ok fine, so I decided to go on to the club with the other guy and leave them alone. But before we separated, I asked her if she can take my camera cuz I don't want to lose it in the club and she agreed. So I come home late at night and go straight to bed (my friend and the guy were already asleep when I got back to the hostel). So the next day we woke up and went for breakfast and I forgot about the camera until we get back and I ask her for it. Of course she has no idea where it is and said the cleaning staff must have taken it. In the end, we decided that we'd split the cost of the lost camera (half each)...which I think is fair. Fast foward a few months, I asked her to pay me back. She replied with a message saying she shouldn't have to pay half the brand new price I paid at the time purchase but half of what it was worth at the time it was lost. Ok fine, I agree with that and admit I never thought about that. She also said she didn't like dealing with money issues between friendship. Ok...fine....but this is the part which really pisses me off. In the same email she writes, Honestly, I don't think I should be paying you anything at all. I watched your camera as a favour as a friend and because I lost it I have to pay for it? To me, it sounds she doesn't want to take any accountability at all and she's trying to get herself out of paying a small debt. And by saying "she was doing me a favour" made it sound like I asked something huge of her. Wow...Geez....I only asked her to watch my camera cuz they weren't going clubbing with us so it'd be safer with them. A simple task...and now she's trying to blame it back on me? And she contradicts herself when she said she doesn't want money to cause problems between us then saying I shouldn't have to pay you cause I was doing you a favour. I don't know...I thought I was already being fair by charging her half the price of an outdated camera. But by saying what was above, to me, it just pisses me off this tells me alot about her character. What do you people think? Take a walk along the pier, and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a picture postcard or a painting by Signac or Matisse. Picturesquely painted villas with red tiled roofs sit along the dock, indulgently watching over the wooden fishing boats that bob gently next to large, expensive yachts. 12th century churches, the famous parasol pines and narrow cobblestone streets among picture-perfect houses complete the feeling that it’s too beautiful to be real. Much has been made of the very special quality of light that is only found in St. Tropez. Maybe it's because of its unique and paradoxical location, or perhaps the spectacular, almost tropical climate has something to do with it. Whatever the reason, when you see the way the luminescent light plays across the wooden sailboats, or highlights one of the beautiful fountains, you’ll feel the stirrings of your inner artist, and long to pick up a paintbrush and palette. St. Tropez is also known for its beaches. The most famous is the Plage de Pampelonne, with its five km of almost blinding white sand, exotic boutiques, sidewalk cafes and restaurants, including the renowned "Club 55." At the north end you’ll find the Plage de Tahiti, which is a well-known haunt of famous celebrities. Other beaches you can visit include Bouillabaisse, Caneliers, and Salins. To the south of Plage de Pampelonne is Cap Camarat, and just beyond that - a little less accessible and therefore much less crowded - are Plage de l’Escalet and Plage de la Briande. If you go a little farther south, you’ll find a wonderful beach - Gigaro, and the town of La Croix Valmer. In all, you’ll find over 40 beaches in the area, so it’s easy to enjoy soaking up the sun every day, if that’s your pleasure. If you prefer something a little more strenuous than lying on the beach, St. Tropez offers something for everyone in way of activities. You can find: Hiking, Biking, Golf, Tennis, Racquetball, Fitness Center, Miniature Golf, Amusement Parks, Fishing, Horseback Riding, Shopping, Restaurants (from the very expensive to the inexpensive), Cinemas, Swimming, Snorkeling/Scuba Diving, Boating, Sailing, Water-skiing, Surfing, Windsurfing, Parasailing, and Jet skiing. When you’re finished soaking up the sun, you can move indoors, and soak up a little culture instead. There are plenty of wonderful museums, art galleries and other events scheduled throughout the year.About The Author: Sandy Knoll, the author, operates a websited devoted to beaches and everything related to beaches.
