Amazing Seascapes In Albany
By Gavin Wyatt
The south west of Australia has plenty to offer the intrepid campervan explorer. Thick, towering forests lie side by side with rugged, rocky coastlines and beautiful beaches, all interspersed with quaint towns steeped in history and culture. In a far flung corner of the south west lies the bustling city of Albany, which at 409 kilometres from Perth is the ideal destination for a motorhome tour. Surrounded by three high mountains and facing the blue waters of the King George III Sound, there are enough natural attractions in and around this city of 30 000 people to fill a thousand holidays, and no visitors leave here disappointed.

The most striking thing about Albany and its surrounds is the scenery. Clear, cloudless skies are the only thing bluer than the azure seas, and the brilliant white of the beach sands adds to the rich kaleidoscope of colour. Middleton beach is a favourite spot for visitors because on the scenic drive there are a number of places you can pull off the road and take in the stunning seascape. The beach is the favourite swimming spot amongst locals, and anglers are often found trying their luck off the shore here. Nearby is Ellen Cove, another safe swimming beach with barbeque and picnic facilities. The waters here are calm, protected from the waves of the Southern Ocean by the King George Sound, which makes them perfect for family-oriented beachside activities.

Albany is an important business centre and port for this part of Western Australia, but in years gone by it was notorious for something else- as a base and a processing plant for the numerous whaling ships that operated

Open Question: Which Tennessee city makes for the best weekend vacation & site seeing destination: Memphis or Nashville?
My family consists of two men, an eleven year old boy, and a seventeen year old foreign exchange student from Vietnam. They have an extra day off from school, so we thought about doing something special (barring this weekends weather permits). We've never been to TN.

Open Question: What to think of this situation?
Hey, I'm gonna start off with the background story I have a female friend which we went on a trip together to Europe for a vacation(strictly just friends). On the first night she met a guy who travelled along with us on the rest of the trip (btw...he also had a friend). Really nice guy...so what right? Anyways, on one of our destinations we all wanted to go to a club, but on the way my friend and her new "BF" decided they wanted some alone time. Ok fine, so I decided to go on to the club with the other guy and leave them alone. But before we separated, I asked her if she can take my camera cuz I don't want to lose it in the club and she agreed. So I come home late at night and go straight to bed (my friend and the guy were already asleep when I got back to the hostel). So the next day we woke up and went for breakfast and I forgot about the camera until we get back and I ask her for it. Of course she has no idea where it is and said the cleaning staff must have taken it. In the end, we decided that we'd split the cost of the lost camera (half each)...which I think is fair. Fast foward a few months, I asked her to pay me back. She replied with a message saying she shouldn't have to pay half the brand new price I paid at the time purchase but half of what it was worth at the time it was lost. Ok fine, I agree with that and admit I never thought about that. She also said she didn't like dealing with money issues between friendship. Ok...fine....but this is the part which really pisses me off. In the same email she writes, Honestly, I don't think I should be paying you anything at all. I watched your camera as a favour as a friend and because I lost it I have to pay for it? To me, it sounds she doesn't want to take any accountability at all and she's trying to get herself out of paying a small debt. And by saying "she was doing me a favour" made it sound like I asked something huge of her. Wow...Geez....I only asked her to watch my camera cuz they weren't going clubbing with us so it'd be safer with them. A simple task...and now she's trying to blame it back on me? And she contradicts herself when she said she doesn't want money to cause problems between us then saying I shouldn't have to pay you cause I was doing you a favour. I don't know...I thought I was already being fair by charging her half the price of an outdated camera. But by saying what was above, to me, it just pisses me off this tells me alot about her character. What do you people think?

Voting Question: good travel websites for very flexible travelers?
Are there any websites that allow you to be flexible with your dates (not just +/- 3 days, but more like +/- 6 months) and/or destinations? Iwant to go on a vacation - I don't care when and I have several places that I'd be interested in visiting. I just care how much it costs. Any suggestions??

Open Question: Laid back US beach destination in December?
Where can I find a laid back but well maintained beach town in the US? Me and my girlfriend are looking to go on a vacation next month somewhere nice with a laid back attitude. In the summer we vacation at Sylvan Beach, NY which has a well maintained beach and a very small amusement park. However, because it is in NY it obviously is not a good destination for December as the beach will likely be under 2 feet of snow by then. Any Ideas? We would prefer to be able to rent a small cottage with some privacy from neighbors. Our budget is about $1500 and we would like that to cover a weeks stay. Preferably the cost of lodging will be near $1000 to leave a travel and dining budget. Thanks for the response U.S.A. gal but we are looking for somewhere warm in December :)

Resolved Question: How is Key West for a vacation destination? What is there to do there?

Voting Question: Where should I elope?
My boyfriend of 4 years and I are going to get married and not tell anyone (elope). We decided that we want to go somewhere we haven't been to before so no Florida, Chicago, (we're from Iowa), Nebraska and I definitely don't want to do something overdone like VEGAS. Please help us with some ideas that would be fairly inexpensive as we'll have to do airfare, rings, hotel, etc all at once. We're thinking that we'll just tell everyone we're going on vacation and tell everyone when we get back. Great way to have the private wedding we want and the honeymoon we can afford! We just need help finding the destination!!!! Thanks.

in this area. These days the whales are still an attraction, but for all the right reasons! Often they can be seen from the shore between July and October, frolicking in the waters around Albany with their newly born young, passing the time before they migrate north again. There are tours that can be taken out close to the whales, and the old whaling station is now a museum and information centre where a whaling ship has been preserved for visitors to wander through. Often whales can be seen from the museum, breaching in the waters where they used to be killed.

Spectacular coastal scenery lies ten minutes south of Albany, in the Torndirrup National Park. This is a great park to tour in your campervan because sealed roads lead to all the major features. The most well known of these is ‘Natural Bridge‘, a large granite formation where the ocean has worn away the rock to leave a large strip of granite crossing the water like a bridge. Another attraction is ‘The Gap‘, where the waves have battered a large chasm into the 50 metre high granite walls. Close by there are a series of blowholes which spray water and blow air as the waves crash into the rocky shore.

The town of Albany is a joy in itself. Its long history and heritage is evident in the old (and well preserved) buildings that line its streets, and the cityscape is dominated by the Princess Royal Harbour, which the main street leads directly to. There are a number of interesting historical sites to visit, the most popular being the Old Gaol, wich was built by convicts as their own prison and now is a captivating museum. Another impressive spot to visit is the Brig Amity, a full scale replica of the original ship that brought the first settlers to Albany. You can go on board and below decks and learn of the voyage of this important ship.

Saturday mornings are a busy time in Albany, because Aberdeen Street in the middle of the city turns into a thriving open air market where farmers, artists and entrepreneurs sell their wares. Its a great place to stock up your picnic baskets, and soak up the fun atmosphere which is enhanced by the presence of numerous buskers. Once the baskets are stocked, you could always hop into your camper and head off to the Albany wind farm, where twelve of the largest turbines in the southern hemisphere tower over the coastline- an impressive sight.

The range and diversity of attractions in Albany is what keeps visitors coming back again and again, and is really helping to elevate its status as a tourist destination. For you in your camper it is like the cherry on the cake- a beautiful destination to top off your drive through the magnificent scenery of south west Australia. And if that doesnt tempt you to go on holiday, then nothing will!
